The Pulmonary Artery Catheter: Rembrandt's Paintbrush?

Program Description / Statement of Need:

The use of the pulmonary artery catheter has declined over the past decade due in part to articles showing no improved patient outcomes with its use. When the device is used properly and the indications and complications understood, great clinical value can still be obtained. This session discusses the importance of education on the use of this tool.  Topics included are indications, applications and complications of pulmonary artery catheterization; central venous access techniques; and waveform identification.

Target Audience:
This program has been designed for a multidisciplinary physician and nurse audience including: Emergency Medicine / ICU / Anesthesia / Peri-op / Intensivists / Trauma / Critical Care

Program Objectives:

By the end of the session the participant will be able to:

1. Define indications and complications for pulmonary artery catheterization.

2. Describe central venous access insertion techniques.

3. Identify normal waveforms and pressure values from a pulmonary artery catheter..
