The Use of Dynamic Parameters in Perioperative Fluid Management

Program Description / Statement of Need:

Concepts in perioperative fluid management have changed dramatically since the 1940’s, however, current practices are often based in traditional assumptions and are not often patient specific. This session reviews key historical concepts as a precursor to the rational for goal directed therapy and the physiologic rationale for use of volume responsiveness dynamic parameters in the management of the critically ill perioperative patient. Evidence supporting the use of goal directed therapy for improving both patient and economic outcomes is discussed.

Target Audience:
This program has been designed for a multidisciplinary physician and nurse audience including: Emergency Medicine / ICU / Anesthesia / Peri-op / Intensivists / Trauma / Critical Care

Program Objectives:

By the end of the session the participant will be able to:

- Describe two opposite fluid replacement strategies.

- Delineate parameters used for goal directed therapy.

- Interpret SV and SVV values in a case study format.
